3 Signs Your Child Needs More Than Homework Help

One of the hardest things to watch as a parent is seeing your child try so hard in math and still struggle.
I’ve had parents come to me exhausted after years of nightly homework battles. They tell me their child studies for hours, attends tutoring, redoes assignments, and still freezes during tests or forgets everything the next day.
And almost every time, the child has quietly started believing something painful about themselves:
“I’m just bad at math.”
But after over 20 years of working with students with learning differences, neurodivergent learners, and struggling math students, I can tell you something very important: Most of these children are not bad at math. Many of them are bright, thoughtful, creative kids who simply need math taught differently.
Over the years, I’ve noticed patterns that show when a student may need more than traditional homework help. These are often the students who need intervention, executive functioning support, and instruction designed for how their brain learns.
One of the biggest signs is when a child seems to understand something one day… and then completely loses it the next. This happens constantly with students who struggle with working memory and processing. A student can genuinely understand a concept during a lesson, but without the right systems in place, that information never becomes organized in a way their brain can retrieve later.
I see this especially with students who have ADHD, dyscalculia, dyslexia, or executive functioning challenges. Parents sometimes think their child “wasn’t paying attention,” but many times the student is actually working harder than everyone else just to hold information together mentally. That’s one reason I started integrating executive functioning directly into my math instruction.
In my classes, students don’t just learn math concepts — they learn systems.
We build an entire digital notetaking structure together in Notability where students learn how to organize information, search for previous lessons, reference examples, and create clear step-by-step notes they can return to independently. And honestly, watching students learn how to find information instead of panic over forgetting it has been one of the most transformative parts of my teaching. I’ve had students who used to shut down completely become independent learners simply because they finally had organizational tools that matched how their brain works.
Another sign a child may need more than homework help is when math becomes emotional very quickly. Some students shut down before they even start. Some cry over homework within minutes. Others avoid math entirely or become incredibly frustrated over what looks like a “small mistake.” From the outside, it can sometimes look dramatic or confusing. But when I work with these students closely, I often see something very different underneath the surface: overwhelm.
Many struggling math students are carrying years of foundational gaps while also trying to process current grade-level material. Their brains are overloaded before they even begin the assignment. So when a parent says:
“They know how to do this. We literally just studied it yesterday.”
the student may actually be experiencing cognitive overload, memory breakdown, anxiety, or processing fatigue. Math starts to feel unsafe when confusion becomes constant. And unfortunately, many bright students begin tying their self-worth to their math performance. That’s why I believe intervention should never just be about getting through tonight’s homework.
It should be about rebuilding confidence, number sense, resilience, and independence step-by-step.
I also see many students who have had tutoring for years, but the same struggles continue returning over and over again. The student may improve temporarily, pass the next quiz, or complete the current homework assignment… but underneath, the foundation is still unstable. That’s where specialized instruction becomes different from general tutoring. My goal is not simply to help students survive math class week-to-week. My goal is to help students become independent learners who understand why math works, how to organize their thinking, and how to approach challenges without immediately shutting down. I want students to walk into Algebra I and beyond with confidence instead of fear.
And one of my favorite moments as a teacher is when a student who once believed they were “bad at math” suddenly realizes:
“Wait… I actually can do this.”
Because usually, they could all along. They just needed someone to teach them in a way that made sense for their brain.
